Here’s where to start

Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies; otherwise use Stamps Health Services, its after-hours resources, and Residence Life support as appropriate.

What should my student do if they become seriously sick or injured in the dorm?

A seriously ill or injured resident should use emergency medical services for urgent or life-threatening conditions and may contact Stamps Health Services for clinical care or after-hours guidance. Residence Life staff can help with immediate residential support but do not replace medical professionals.

Will the college call me if my student becomes sick?

Stamps Health Services treats student health records as protected FERPA treatment/education records and generally requires student consent before disclosure outside treatment. FERPA permits disclosure in a health or safety emergency when necessary to protect the student or others, but parents should not expect an automatic call for ordinary illness.

Can I call Housing and ask what is happening with my student's room or roommate problem?

Housing can receive a parent's concern and provide general policy/process information. Student-specific information may be protected by FERPA or other privacy rules, so the most effective path is usually for the student to work directly with Residence Life or provide any needed authorization.

Can parents access a college student's education records if the student is our tax dependent?

Georgia Tech’s Registrar confirms that FERPA rights generally belong to the student. Federal FERPA guidance permits a postsecondary institution to disclose education records to a parent when the student is claimed as a dependent for federal tax purposes, but the institution is not required to use that exception. Families should use Georgia Tech’s current authorization/records process for routine access.

Can Georgia Tech tell parents about an under-21 alcohol or drug violation?

Georgia Tech's Student Code of Conduct permits parent/legal-guardian notification for students under 21 when an alcohol/drug violation involves endangerment, or when future violations are likely to result in suspension or removal from housing. Notification is conditional, not automatic for every violation.

Does FERPA still apply if my Georgia Tech student is only 17?

Georgia Tech applies FERPA to its student education records. U.S. Department of Education guidance defines an eligible student as a student who is 18 or who attends a postsecondary institution at any age. A 17-year-old Georgia Tech student therefore generally controls FERPA rights over college education records, subject to FERPA’s permitted disclosure exceptions.

Can the college contact parents during a serious health or safety emergency?

Georgia Tech's FERPA and Stamps privacy materials recognize the health/safety emergency exception. In a serious emergency, the University may share information with appropriate people when knowledge is necessary to protect the student or others; this is different from routine parental access.
